Beneath the Signal and Noise is a sculptural installation populated by prone and precarious identities, chimeric figurations and post-industrial landscapes. The installation entwines issues of empire and technological utopianism, using found materials. The work was first presented at The Silver Building in Silvertown London, UK in the international group exhibition Silver Sehnsucht in Oct 2017 curated by Mara-Johanna Kölmel, Silvana Lagos and Rafael Schacter (A by P). The exhibition was part of Frieze week and was reviewed in Third Text.
As part of the exhibition programme, Matterlurgy presented a live performance in partnership with The Line London’s first dedicated art walk conceived by Megan Piper and Clive Dutton. The installation was later exhibited at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) as part of the collections display in 2018-2019. The work has since been included in the UK Green Guide: Creative Responses to Sustainability, 2020 published by Asia-Europe Foundation.
